Isaac Israels’ life was defined by art, literature and travel. This book follows his travels across Europe, from extended stays in bustling Paris and London to inspiring journeys through Germany, Italy, Austria, Spain, Denmark and Sweden. He captured the many impressions he gained in sketchbooks with great speed and virtuosity. Later he developed these into vibrant paintings. This book sheds light on Israels’ wanderlust and that of his contemporaries, his interest in different European cultures and what ‘Europe’ meant in the early twentieth century.
